World Heritage

What do the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Barrier Reef, Macquarie Island and Heard and the MacDonald Islands have in common?

Acknowledged as being amongst the world's greatest treasures, and therefore of outstanding universal significance to humanity, these sites have all been registered on the World Heritage List.

Celebrated as two of the greatest natural wonders of the world, both Macquarie Island and Heard and McDonald Islands, Australia's only subantarctic island groups, were granted World Heritage status on 3 December 1997.

The Australian Antarctic Division launched a major scientific expedition to Heard Island and the surrounding seas during the austral summer of 2003–2004.
