Ground transport
The stations have a range of vehicles and machinery available for use during resupply operations, for building and maintenance work and field trips off station.
Many scientists require transport to support their programmes, and vehicles are also in demand for recreational use.

Different vehicles are used in the same areas at different times of the year, depending on snow and ice conditions. Small boat travel is also used extensively in some areas.
When travelling in Antarctica, always use established tracks or approved routes. Otherwise take the most direct route and avoid fragile formations and communities.
All expeditioners using vehicles must first undergo basic training, including techniques of snow and ice travel, such as crevasse rescue, and the ability to recognise weather and ice conditions, as well as the basics of GPS and radar navigation.
