Training policy on attendance

We are responsible for ensuring that all expeditioners are prepared with the knowledge and skills to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of themselves, others and also the environment during their time in Antarctica. Each expeditioner has a responsibility to ensure that at all times they take all reasonable steps to ensure that they do not create a risk for themselves, others or the environment. Accordingly, we plan and coordinate pre-departure training programs for expeditioners.

Attendance at training courses is compulsory unless an exemption is obtained. An exemption from training should not automatically be anticipated, and each application will be considered on its own merits.

Training Options Form

All expeditioners intending to attend a program are requested to complete the Options & Exemptions Form 2010 and return it to the AAD as soon as possible. Forms must be completed and returned to the AAD no later than six weeks prior to the program starting. Exemptions forms may not be accepted after this date.

Non-attendance at predeparture training

The AAD reserves the right to preclude any expeditioner from Antarctica service if he or she does not either attend the prescribed training program or seek formal exemption by filling out the Options & Exemptions Form 2010. Forms must be completed and returned to the AAD no later than six weeks prior to the program starting. Exemptions forms may not be accepted after this date.

Expeditioners travelling to Antarctica and the subantarctic by ship

All expeditioners travelling by ship must attend their voyage pre-departure briefing, usually on the day of sailing for Antarctica. Non-attendance will exclude expeditioners from embarkation. The lifeboat familiarisation component is an Australian Maritime Safety Authority requirement.

All expeditioners participating in a marine science voyage must also attend a marine science training day.

Marine science training day

In addition to the voyage pre-departure briefing expeditioners embarking on a marine science cruise are required to attend an additional training day.

This is an opportunity to advise you of important information including occupational health and safety, environmental management, workplace diversity and Employee Assistance Program and the liaison services available to expeditioners and families.

Exemption provisions exist where expeditioners have undertaken similar training in the past three years.

There may also be some additional professional training conducted where needs have been identified during program planning.

Expeditioners spending more than two weeks away from Hobart

In addition to attending an aviation predeparture briefing, long term expeditioners must also have attended the Station and Field Predeparture Training Program. These are also attended by wintering and summering expeditioners who will be travelling to Antarctica by ship. Please now refer to section 3 of this document.
