Cat Hair
The outer surface of hair is composed of non-living cells which overlap each other. These cells are characteristic for different animals. Hairs with large smooth edged cells tend to feel smooth and silky (eg. the cat) while rough edges feel coarse. Thick hairs also tend to feel more coarse than fine hairs. These photos have all been take at the same magnification (X500) to show the difference in thickness.
Forensic scientists often study hair by SEM as part of criminal investigations.
