Diatom 2: Asteromphalus

Diatoms are single-cell plants inside a silica skeleton. They play an important part in the Antarctic food web and are the most abundant component of the marine phytoplankton (ie: plant plankton). They are found in both salt and fresh water and are identified by their shape and the often beautiful ornamentation of their skeletons.
