Wood from Mawson's Hut

Mawson's Hut is at Commonwealth Bay at the edge of the Antarctic continent. The Hut was built by Sir Douglas Mawson's wintering party in 1911 and since then the wooden structure has been continually blasted by the winds that have given Commonwealth Bay the reputation of being the windiest place on earth.

Attempts have been made to protect the surface and save the building which is a valuable part of Australia's Antarctic heritage. These wood fibres from the Hut show the effect of severe weathering.
