To most of us the home of emperor penguins seems a long away from our own but Antarctica is not the far-away place it used to be. With continuously occupied research stations, increasing tourism activities and commercial fishing operations the human factor has become an important variable in the management of Antarctic eco-systems.

Our research is aimed not only to learn more about the penguins themselves (how they live, where they go, and what they do and what they need to survive) but also how human activities may impact on their lives and survival chances. So far scientists of the Australian Antarctic Division have spent three winters and a few summers at the Mawson Coast to find answers to all the above questions.
