Dive depth recorders

Dive depth recorders tell us how deep the penguins dive when they are at sea. We often use these in conjunction with satellite trackers to get a three dimensional look at the penguins foraging behaviour. Adélie penguins can dive for up to three minutes and reach depths of 100 metres, but most dives are shorter than this. Most local dives are about one minute in duration and reach depths of around 20 metres. Offshore foraging dives are often longer and deeper, taking about two minutes and reaching 50-70 meters depth.
