Working as an Expedition Mechanic in Antarctica

Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$54,383 ($2,084 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As Expedition Mechanic (EM) you'll maintain a wide range of mobile and stationary mechanical plant and equipment including portable generators/pumps, 4x4 and specialised over snow vehicles and earth moving machinery. You'll also operate and maintain the station power generation facilities (mechanical side).

This role also involves maintaining fuel, lubricant and gas cylinder storage, spare parts and material storage.

Additionally, you'll support station and field operations as required, and assist in science programs when necessary.

You will have a suitable trade qualification (eg motor mechanic, diesel mechanic, plant mechanic, fitter & turner).

If you don't meet all the requirements don't be discouraged. In making final selections we take into account overall team building and the mix of skills required.

The typical employment period for Expedition Mechanics is approximately 15 months.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
