Working as a Plant Inspector in Antarctica

Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$65,811 pa ($2,523 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As the Plant Inspector (PI) you'll manage the Station mechanical section's operations. You're responsible for the operation and mechanical maintenance of power houses, and maintenance of mobile and stationary mechanical plants.

You'll also manage:

  • fuel farms and other fuel and lube storage
  • the mechanical workshop, mechanical spares and consumable stocks, and
  • the training and endorsement of expeditioners to operate vehicles and mechanical plant.

Outside of management and supervisory roles, you'll perform mechanical work and operate equipment as part of the mechanical team. As well as supporting station and field operation, and assisting with science programs when necessary.

You'll have a suitable trade qualification (motor mechanic, diesel mechanic, plant mechanic, fitter & turner etc).

The typical employment period for Plant Inspectors is approximately 15 months.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
