Working as a SL in Antarctica

Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$90,613 pa ($3,473 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As an Antarctic Station Leader (SL) you report to the Support & Coordination Manager and you're responsible for the coordination and management of all programs and expedition personnel (irrespective of employment affiliation or nationality) on Australian Antarctic stations.

This includes:

  • developing and maintaining a productive and cohesive station community, including resolving conflict and maintaining discipline.
  • managing individual performance by assessing behaviour and work competency, and providing constructive feedback, counselling and reporting.
  • manage the achievement of approved scientific, administrative, maintenance and construction programs, both station and field based.
  • managing the AAD Safety Management System ensuring safe conduct of all station and field based programs, including leadership in emergencies such as fire, accident and search and rescue.
  • managing the AAD Environmental Management System and mitigate the environmental impact of operations and ensure environmental laws are observed.
  • manage the implementation of AAD policies for the security of public property and equipment.
  • roster expeditioners to perform duties in the common good of their station.

The typical employment period for Station Leaders is approximately 15 months. There is scope to negotiate shorter employment periods which would just cover the summer or winter periods. A shorter employment period will affect the total of the remuneration package.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
