Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$65,811 pa ($2,523 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As a Field Training Officer (FTO) you're responsible for conducting field training during the pre-departure period in Australia, onboard ship and in the Antarctic and subantarctic. You'll provide leadership or assistance to field groups in support of scientific or operational programs.

This role coordinates station field training programs and trains a search and rescue (SAR) team from the more skilled of the expeditioners on station.

You'll present lectures and practical sessions on:

  • field trip planning
  • leadership
  • risk management
  • environment
  • snow camping
  • clothing in cold climates
  • survival
  • navigation including GPS & radar
  • glacier travel
  • sea-ice travel
  • rope work including vertical rescue and crevasse rescue
  • other related subjects.

You're also responsible for assessing expeditioner field skill competency and reporting on this to the Station Leader and Field Support Coordinator.

The typical employment period for Field Training Officers is around 7 months.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
