In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As Lidar Scientist you'll support the Atmospheric Composition sub-theme of the Australian Antarctic Division's Ice, Ocean, Atmosphere and Climate (IOAC) Program. Your primary duty will be to operate, maintain and calibrate an atmospheric Lidar system at Davis Station, Antarctica, during the 2009 winter. You'll also undertake routine reporting on the operation of the LIDAR and be involved in analysis and interpretation of data.

The key research areas are:

  • Composition, dynamics and climate of the Antarctic troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere, including investigation of energy flow and transfer, coupling between layers and regions, constituent distributions and chemical processes;
  • The microphysics of polar ozone depletion including processes associated with Polar Stratospheric Clouds, atmospheric waves and the polar vortex;
  • Properties and effects of aerosols and their use as a tracer of atmospheric transport;
  • Processes in the Antarctic Upper Troposphere – Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) region;
  • Phenomena and processes in the mesopause region, particularly related to icy layers and the action and interaction of atmospheric waves and tides.

You should have good research, experimental and analytical skills, particularly with regard to high power laser systems. As the position is based mainly in Antarctica, you must be technically resourceful and able to operate with a minimum of supervision.

You will be free of any commitment to write up or publish prior research on commencing employment with the AAD and have a degree from an Australian University, or qualification of equivalent standard from an Australian or overseas university, in a relevant field of science. Applicants with higher qualifications are deemed to have an advantage.

The typical employment period for the Lidar Scientist is approximately 18 months.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
