Working in Aerodrome Plant Operations

Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$54,383 pa ($2,084 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica an allowance of $49,014 pa is payable.

As Aerodrome Grader Operator (AGO) at Wilkins Runway you're directly involved in construction and maintenance of the runway. You'll also have a role in Aerodrome operations, after receiving appropriate training.

Work schedules are heavily influenced by weather conditions. During periods of fine weather, long work days can be expected (up to 12 hours). Night work or shifts may also be implemented during the season.

You'll operate a variety of machinery including:

  • Cat 14H grader
  • Cat D7R Dozer
  • Cat 966G Loader
  • Hagglunds all-terrain vehicles
  • Overaasen and Schmidt snow blowers
  • Challenger MT 865B tractor towing compaction rollers and trailers.

Other tasks involve plant maintenance and servicing, manually 'de-blizzing' plant and machinery, and assisting mechanics in repair and servicing of plant and equipment.

You'll also undertake duties necessary for operation of the camp at Wilkins such as:

  • refueling generators
  • 'de-blizzing' camp infrastructure
  • resupply activities
  • search and rescue training/operations
  • assisting in taking weather observations
  • kitchen and cleaning duties
  • conducting water replenishment and waste collection/clearance
  • operating camp radios.

The typical employment period for Aerodrome Grader Operators varies between approximately 6 to 15 months. During this period you will be required to undertake training in Hobart for up to 8 weeks before departure and remain in Hobart for a debrief of up to 5 days immediately following return from Antarctica.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will apply where eligibility to join the Public Sector Superannuation Accumulation Plan is established.
