Achievements
- 1819-27, participated in Arctic voyages and expeditions, searching for the Northwest Passage
- 1829-33, took part in expedition that located the North Magnetic Pole
- 1835-38, participated in magnetic survey of England, Scotland and Wales
- 1839-43, charted much of the Antarctic coastline
- 1841, discovered the Ross Sea, and named volcanoes Mt Terror and Mt Erabus after the expedition's ships
- 1843, Ross was knighted
