Besides the sites listed below, other excellent sites are referred to in each unit of Classroom Antarctica when they are of use for particular activities.

Australian Antarctic Education sites

Home of the Blizzard contains detailed information about the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911 to 1914.

The CSIRO has developed a site to showcase Scientriffic editor Tanya Patrick's journey to Antarctica in 2007 as a recipient of the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship.

The Circle: Antarctic Experience Hosted by the Tasmanian Department of Education, this site allows students to experience a journey to Antarctica before taking on the roles of a doctor, field training officer, photographer or scientist.

Learning sequences (for Primary and Senior Secondary classes) on Antarctic Science have won the Antarctic and Marine Science Prize for Teachers.

Heard and McDonald Islands and Macquarie Island were both inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.

Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service's Macquarie Island gives comprehensive information on the island's management.

Antarctica and Sir Douglas Mawson [external site] provides a summary of Mawson's association with the Antarctic and Macquarie Island.

In the Footsteps of Sir Douglas Mawson at the South Australian Museum website explores the adventures, successes, science and achievements of Sir Douglas Mawson.

International Antarctic education and information sites

Teachers' Domain Polar Sciences Collection launched in February 2008 for the International Polar Year (IPY) - the collection includes 20 new resources, a lesson plan, and a student activity as well as other resources that complement these. The collection is funded by the National Science Foundation.

NASA's 'for educators' pages contain valuable information on Antarctica for all student levels and also has a students' section.

Education resources for teachers and students on snow and ice at the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre.

The Scott Polar Research Institute includes a marvellous picture library database with many works of art, historical photographs and a comprehensive Index to Antarctic Expeditions (historic and selected modern).

The Scott Polar Research Institute kids' pages features information on some polar explorers and animals, and a collection of polar jokes.

Secrets of the Ice from the Museum of Boston is a great site that focuses on the geography of Antarctica and its importance as a scientific laboratory, with up-to-date information on current global change research.

Private expeditions and personal accounts

Terraquest's Virtual Antarctica provides a good general overview of Antarctic ecology, history and science as well as journals of the Terraquest expedition and links to contemporary adventurers.
