Overview for scientific research in 2010/11

Applications are open for the Australian Antarctic science program in 2010/11.

Projects need to address the Science Strategy 2004/05-2010/11. Please note that this strategy has been extended for a further year to cover 2010/11, to enable finalisation of many of the International Polar Year projects. This will be the final year of the Science Strategy and as such this is primarily a finishing-off year.

In 2010/11 Australia-based research projects utilising samples or data that have already been collected are particularly encouraged. A special focus of the year is writing-up projects and finalising data sets from research undertaken within the International Polar Year and the current Science Strategy. Multidisciplinary projects that offer a synthetic approach to data analysis are particularly encouraged.

Continuing projects will have priority for logistic support in 2010/11, as a result there are only very limited opportunities for additional field projects to be undertaken (see schedule). There are some project opportunities for marine science in 2010/11, however, only projects that are deemed "piggy-back" (those not requiring additional ship days) can be considered at this point.

Marine science projects requiring dedicated ship time in the 2011/12 season are required to submit a full application in the 2010/11 application round.

The total grant funds available to Australian University researchers is $750,000 (check eligibility). Grants up to $30,000 are available for individual projects. Multidisciplinary projects may seek up to $60,000 but applicants need to seek approval from the Chief Scientist prior to applying.

It is a requirement that you contact the relevant Program Leader to discuss lodging an application. The Program Leaders and/or Planning will also be able to assist with enquiries about applications.

Please also refer to the guidelines and carefully read the assessment criteria. These have been updated, so please ensure you consult these before you apply.

Applications are open from 1 May till 30 June 2009. No new application may be commenced after 23 June.
